About

A one-person shop in Charlottesville

Rivanna Works connects the software a small business already owns and takes the repetitive work out from between the pieces. No new platform, no sales team, one engineer you can call.

Who runs it

Logan McCaughan, founder of Rivanna Works
Logan McCaughanFounder. UVA Engineering. Principal software engineer in healthcare.(540) 395-3149

I am a software engineer. My day job is building systems for a hospital, where a bad integration is a patient safety problem. I have spent years making stubborn software talk to other stubborn software and keeping it that way.

I started Rivanna Works because the businesses around me do not have anyone doing that for them. A dental office or a winery pays for QuickBooks, a scheduling tool, a point of sale, and email, and then pays a person to move information between them by hand. Big companies have a team for this. A twelve-person business has the owner, after hours.

So that is the job. Come to your shop, find the two or three places where the paper and the retyping pile up, and wire them together on the software you already have. Where AI helps (drafting a follow-up, sorting requests), I use it. Where it does not, I do not.

I also build and run a couple of apps of my own: Spirit Speak AI, a Bible study app, and H.O.P.E., a help-and-prayer app for Mountain View Chapel in Madison. See the apps.

How the work goes

Four things to hold me to.

In person first

Discovery and setup happen at your place of business. After that, support is by phone, email, or a visit, whichever fits the problem.

Your software stays

The work builds on QuickBooks, Square, Google Calendar, and whatever else you already run. Your staff do not learn a new system.

You can see what it did

Every automated action is written to a log you can read. If you want a rule changed or an automation turned off, it is done the same day.

No contract, and an honest no

One-time setup fee, flat monthly rate, cancel when you want. If discovery does not turn up at least ten hours a week of busywork, you hear that before you pay anything.

Where I work

Albemarle, Greene, Madison, and Orange counties. Roughly anywhere within 45 minutes of Charlottesville.

Farmland in central Virginia with the Blue Ridge in the distance

Albemarle County

Charlottesville, the Downtown Mall, the medical offices along 29 North, and the wineries out toward Crozet and Scottsville.

Greene County

Stanardsville, Ruckersville, and the Route 33 corridor. Trades businesses and tasting rooms.

Madison County

Farms, contractors, and main-street shops that still run on paper invoices.

Orange County

The Town of Orange, Gordonsville, and the Route 15 corridor. Seasonal businesses and rural delivery routes.

Farther out than that? Ask. Some of this can be done remotely, and I will tell you up front whether yours can.

Tell me where your week goes

Fifteen minutes on the phone or coffee at your shop. I will ask what you spend Monday morning doing and tell you whether any of it is worth automating.
